Starting the Journey | Week One Day One

Reflection

What does preparing for a trip look like for you? I’m sure your first question is, what kind of trip? Is it a vacation? Is it a work trip? Is it a major move for a new job? No matter the trip, in each case, you have preparations to make. You might have a mental checklist like myself or a three-page written checklist like my wife. I’m sure you have people to talk to, arrangements to make, and clothes/things to pack. You likely want to prepare both yourself and others for the trip.

We are preparing to go on a spiritual journey together as we read Luke’s account of Jesus as he heads towards Jerusalem. Jesus has quite the following at this point according to Luke. Today we get to witness Jesus’ response to three more potential disciples (Luke 9:51-62). Two with the intention to follow Jesus and one Jesus invited to follow. The first is warned by Jesus that the journey is not an easy one. The second is told to leave the spiritual dead to bury the dead because it is more important to proclaim the kingdom of God. Finally, the third potential disciple is told that following requires leaving right away and that their arrangements aren’t as important as simply following right this very moment.

Jesus is calling these potential disciples to know the cost and follow right away. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, but it won’t be what you expect. Joining us on this spiritual journey through Luke’s account doesn’t require telling your family, but it may just lead you to give up and change parts of your life along the way. So today, count the cost, but also go ahead and take the next step on the road with Jesus.

Devotional Questions

What days/times each week (for the next seven weeks) will you use this devotional (pick three moments each week)?

We will share a devotion on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week.

What do you hope or expect to happen along this devotional journey?

What might the cost of this journey be?

What might the reward of this journey be?

Lord, there is nothing better than life surrendered to you, yet we are easily led away from this beauty. We have counted the cost and believe you will do a beautiful work in us through this journey. Help us to remain on the path with you. Amen
