How wonderful it has been already in this first week walking with Jesus. It started a little scary, and we witnessed some powerful things, but we are starting to glimpse and experience the simplicity of walking with Jesus. Today, however, something curious happens. We know the religious leaders aren’t Jesus’ biggest fans. However, an expert in the law appears to genuinely come to ask Jesus an important question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25).
We listen to Jesus respond with a story about an injured, teetering-on-death man. The story isn’t so much about the man but those who pass him by in his state of dire need. A priest and a Levite both ignore his need even though they were likely his people. But finally, a Samaritan who has no obligation to the man goes out of their way to help the man, sacrificing time, energy, and finances. Jesus tells the teacher of the law that he is to be like the Samaritan, and that is what he must do to inherit eternal life (Luke 10:25-37).
What does all of this mean? Are we prepared to stop along the road to help someone in need, even if it slows down our journey?
What gets in your way stopping to help others in your life?
What ways might Jesus be challenging you to stop on this journey to bring healing to someone?
What can you do in the next week to share God’s care and love for someone who needs it?
Lord, open my eyes to those I’m passing by and help me love them as you love me. Amen
