Knocking on the Door | Week 2 Day 3

Reflection

Luke 13:22-35

We continue to visit each town following Jesus and hearing his teaching. Jesus doesn’t seem scared by any of the big questions people ask him. We all wanted to hear his answer to the question asked. We were drawn in. The question was about those who will be saved. Specifically, it was asked, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” There are many who are following Jesus at this point.

Jesus’ answer isn’t easy. He doesn’t respond with a specific number or amount but instead answers with a story about an owner of a house and his door. He tells us that the door will be open, but when it is closed, it will be too late. He goes further to say that those knocking on the door will beg to come in, while the owner will say that he doesn’t know them.

He says things won’t be pretty for those who don’t enter and see who already entered the house. He mentions the greats like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets. Apparently, many of us won’t make it. There will even be those from far away that will take their place at the feast. What does it mean to really know Jesus and enter into his home? Are we just fans observing his gift of teaching and in awe of the miracles he performs? Or are we actually in a relationship with Jesus and participating in the kingdom He is teaching us about?

_____

In a world driven by online presence, social media, and influencers of every kind, it is easy for us to falsely claim a relationship with people around the world that we watch and listen to. We can even do the same with those in our own church. We can assume because we spoke to them a few times each month that we are connected but miss the fact that they are struggling with their health, relationships, or finances. Just because we chat about Jesus or are amazed by His grace doesn’t mean we have entered the door to His dwelling place and really know Him. We might know a few facts about Him and know what He is doing, but Jesus is calling us to more than knowing about Him. He wants our lives surrendered to the Father through our faith in Him.

Devotional Question

What brought you to your relationship with Christ?

Be honest with yourself, what is the level of your relationship today? Have you entered His house or are you more of a spectator and fan hanging around but not surrendering everything?

What steps do you need to take this week to become a true follower of Christ?

Lord, we are more comfortable being fans, but you call us to a deep, beautiful relationship with You. Help us surrender our comfort for the kingdom You are calling us to, which will prove to be more beautiful than our comfort ever would be. Amen
